IEEE New Power Over Ethernet PlatformD Admin
IEEE officially announced the launch of three projects and an efficient connection platform to expand the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard. IEEE is currently making modifications to the base standard to allow for the expansion of the capabilities of the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard. The organization is working to meet the requirements of industries all around the world and to meet demand with the Power over Ethernet Passive Optical Network.
Ethernet impacts the day-to-day lives of countless people and the technology has become an essential part of businesses and homes. In 2012 alone, over 1.2 billion ports were deployed. The technology was first crafted to standardize connection between computer, printer, device and server in a local area network. The standard includes a handful of technologies including data center networks, tablets, smart phones, computers, infrastructure, laptops and mobile devices.
The IEEE P802.3br is a “Draft Standard for Ethernet Amendment Specification and Management Parameters for Interspersing Express Traffic” is currently in development. This standard addresses issues from industries that are just starting to utilize IEEE 802.3 applications. Various industries including transportation, audio, video and automotive require traffic stream convergence and low-latency on the same connections at a cost effective price. Currently, this function requires various networks that contain parallel links. When the IEEE P802.3br has been completed, the base standard would be modified to accept interspersed expressed traffic.
In order to determine a need for further PoE capabilities, the IEEE P802.3bt Draft Standard for Ethernet Amendment: Physical Layer and Management Parameters for DTE Power via MDI over 4-Pair” was created. Under the IEEE P802.3bt standard, various applications that require extra power to be even more efficient and powerful. In addition, a variety of applications such as IP surveillance cameras, access points, laptops, RFID readers, POS terminals, or building management have shown need for additional power.
Also, in development is the IEEE P802.3bu “Draft Standard for Ethernet Amendment: Physical Layer and Management Parameters for 1-Pair Power over Data Lines” standard. This new standard would lengthen PoE to data terminal equipment utilizing a twisted pair IEEE 802.3 Ethernet connection. Power on the single-pair data interface removes requirement for separate power wiring.
In addition, the new IEEE 802.3 Industry Connections NG-EPON Ad Hoc was introduced by IEEE to facilitate and explore technology choices and its potential in the market. This technology provides a variety of options for a NG-EPON that have data rates above 10 Gigabit per second. This technology is utilized for applications in commercial and residential areas. Vendors in North America, South America and Asia are also considering NG-EPON technologies for the next generation.
