Introduction to Intelligent Transportation Systems

Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are no longer isolated instances that manage traffic lights or identify vehicles. They are integrated transportation solutions that incorporate weather conditions when calculating transit times and communicate with rail and air systems to obtain updated arrival or departure times. With artificial intelligence (AI) applications, ITS can predict potential equipment failures and automatically schedule maintenance to ensure reliable operations.

Integrated ITS solutions cannot function without real-time, continuous, and reliable data. Without these data requirements, AI applications cannot alter traffic light timing to lessen congestion. For example, monitoring systems can track the number of vehicles moving through a roadway. When traffic exceeds an established threshold, an AI-powered solution can adjust traffic lights, open an additional lane, alert drivers to potential delays, and provide alternative routes.

However, delivering data in real time requires robust physical and digital infrastructures. Endpoint devices must withstand harsh operating environments, ranging from extreme heat or cold, high humidity, and contaminants. Solutions must also protect against cyberattacks that can paralyze a city’s transportation network. Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) technology helps ITS address these challenges by enabling industrial-grade hardware and secure data transmission. It provides PoE solutions for transportation challenges.

What Are Intelligent Transportation Systems?

ITS uses connected devices located throughout urban and rural areas to collect and analyze data in real time. It processes the information to optimize traffic flow, reduce accidents, and improve public transit reliability. With integrated technologies, cities can incorporate vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications for toll collection and emergency response.

Combining road sensor data with AI-powered traffic management creates a foundational layer offering more resilient and adaptable solutions. Increased real-world deployments allow ITS to scale for more efficient, sustainable, and livable systems. Technologies enable municipalities to continually transform their transportation infrastructure.

What Technologies Are Used in ITS?

While technologies such as 5G connectivity or edge computing can be deployed individually, their true benefit comes when their capabilities are combined. For example, 5G connections support faster transmission of more data, which allows Internet of Things (IoT) devices to be deployed in greater numbers. With more reliable data collection, AI-powered applications can deliver better insights. ITS operations depend on technologies such as edge computing, IoT, 5G, and V2X communication to construct a robust transport network.

📡

5G Connectivity

Cellular providers promote the high-speed capabilities of 5G, which enable seamless data transfer at gigabits per second; however, its lower latency, wider bandwidth, and enhanced capacity also support IoT deployment, edge computing, and AI applications.

  • Lower Latency. Latency measures how long it takes a signal to travel from the sender to the receiver and back. The longer the round trip takes, the more likely the signal is to be delayed. With 5G’s lower latency, fast turnarounds make for reliable real-time communications.
  • Wider Bandwidth. 5G technology optimizes network traffic so more data can be transmitted simultaneously from multiple endpoints, enabling more data-driven insights.
  • Enhanced Capacity. 5G can manage multiple devices simultaneously, making the deployment of numerous IoT devices feasible.

Using 5G, ITS can deploy more devices, receive data faster, and respond quickly to changes in a transportation network.

🌐

Internet of Things (IoT)

IoT technology allows transportation systems to deploy more data-collection points. With more endpoints, data becomes more granular and outputs more accurate. ITS can respond quicker, helping reduce inefficiencies, improve safety, and automate processes.

For example, public buses struggle to stay on schedule. By monitoring their location, ITS can determine if a bus is behind schedule. An automated application can calculate the time needed to get the bus back on schedule, factoring in current and historical information. It can divide the time by the number of traffic lights the bus will encounter and reduce the wait time at each light by a few seconds, keeping the bus on schedule.

Railway sensors can detect track anomalies and obstructions that can disrupt schedules or lead to accidents. Transportation systems can monitor equipment performance and automatically schedule maintenance to ensure reliable operations.

Edge Computing

Edge computing processes data closer to its collection points, allowing ITS to respond faster and more reliably. For example, camera footage could be processed at the edge, reducing the burden that video files can place on a network. With a cloud connection, questionable footage can be forwarded to the cloud for system-wide access. Such a configuration enables real-time data synthesis to improve safety and enable rapid response.

🤖

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) requires a robust computer network with enhanced computing capabilities and lots of data. Data analytics also uses collected data to provide actionable insights for continuous improvement. Severe weather can down trees, blocking roadways and damaging power lines. AI applications can identify obstacles, reroute traffic, and dispatch emergency crews for immediate response. Analyzing the data and responses allows ITS administrators to highlight areas for improvement.

A successful ITS is not a single solution but a collection of technologies that, when combined, creates a reliable transportation system that improves safety, reduces inefficiencies, and contributes to an enhanced residential experience.

Why Use PoE Solutions for Transportation?

ITS solutions need power, data, and connectivity to realize their full potential. They need a robust infrastructure to ensure reliable operations. PoE technology provides these foundational components, making it a cost-effective solution for urban and rural transportation.

What is PoE?

PoE technology enables Ethernet cables to send data and power through a single network connection, eliminating the need for a separate power source. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) maintains standards that define how up to 90W of power can be delivered to PoE devices and up to 10 gigabits of data can be transmitted every second.
Most implementations use PoE-enabled switches, such as Planet’s ITS-6326-8P10T2XS-WV managed switch, to provide power and data to connected devices. Switches increase endpoints so transportation systems can deploy more sensors, IP cameras, and traffic monitors for data granularity. They allow ITS administrators to cluster sensors for centralized management. Industrial switches are designed to withstand harsh environments and extreme temperatures, making them a reliable component of an ITS system. Other benefits include the following:

📶

More Powerful Endpoints

The latest PoE standard (IEEE 802.3bt) supports smarter endpoints that require more power to collect and transmit gigabits of data. Moving data processing to the edge makes systems more responsive. Powerful endpoints enable more effective communications, allowing data to flow reliably without infrastructure changes.

📡

Increased Data Requirements

Integrated ITS solutions require faster data transfer. Real-time information cannot be constrained because of insufficient bandwidth. PoE surveillance cameras and wireless access points can leverage 5G connectivity to deliver enhanced bandwidth without compromising network performance.

⚙️

Greater Flexibility

PoE technology allows municipalities to build flexible transportation systems. Because PoE-enabled equipment does not require a separate power source, system components can be located optimally to ensure performance. System coverage can extend to rural areas, railways, and highways where electrical power may be unavailable.

📉

Lower Cost

Industrial PoE switches are designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions. They operate in adverse environmental conditions such as weather extremes or road and rail vibrations. Their rugged exteriors extend equipment lifespan, lowering lifecycle costs. Eliminating electrical wiring reduces installation and maintenance costs, improving return on investment (ROI).

🌱

More Sustainable Systems

ITS solutions must scale with the cities they serve. PoE flexibility enables transportation systems to adapt to evolving mobility needs. The technology can help bridge the gap between existing and advanced infrastructure, allowing cities to leverage their resources to build more sustainable systems.
