Ahhhhh information technology. The IT industry has positive employment projections and lots of room for vertical advancement. It’s a great industry to get involved in, and the perfect time to do so.
As more and more of our devices become “smart” and connected, the demand for knowledgeable help is only going to rise in the coming years.
Furthermore, the work is dynamic and forwards-looking. The internet of things (IoT) is here, and it’s here to stay. We’ve covered this ground before, but it merits saying a second time. According to research, there are going to be 25 billion devices connected to the internet by 2020. Now that is some serious scale.
Ok, so what’s the catch? Well, trust me when I tell you there’s a dark side to working in IT.
It’s not always glamorous, and your patience will absolutely be tested. Some customers need to be handheld the whole way. Others will be convinced they know more than you do before you even get their account information.
Given the unique challenges IT professionals face day in and day out, we thought it might be helpful to pull together a list of the most important skills and tips to employ.
Whether you’re just stepping into the market looking for an IT job, or are already running a team of IT pros, these key tenets will be helpful to keep in mind when speaking with your customers.
We started this project by asking our own technical support team to help us come up with a list. It was tough to narrow it down to just ten because we got a ton of great feedback and ideas. But with a team effort, we’ve reached the finish line.
The result of our collaboration is the following list.
Behold! The 10 commandments you’ll want to keep in mind during your work as an IT professional. #7 should be particularly helpful when you realize 20 minutes into a call that you forgot to start the conversation with “have you checked if your device is plugged in?”
Keep the ten IT commandments close to your heart and you’ll be well on your way to a rewarding career path in this both established and promising industry.
